@goarmywisconsin recruiters presented the colors for a Brewers game! They did so ❌without wearing headgear. I'm glad to see DrillAmerica 1903s instead of an M16 or M4, except for the ❌sling being threaded through the #StackingSwivel and ❌both guards holding them incorrectly (sling-out) and ❌the left guard being at Left Shoulder. ❌No real care was given to harness socket adjustment it seems. ❌Hands are "wherever" on the staffs. The colors section of TC 3-21.5 and its 1903 annex are appropriate reading before setting out again to present the colors. ℹ️Lastly, the Army Field Flag has strict requirements. Be sure to read AR 840-10 about who can carry it.

❌Where is that salute technique, SSG? TC 3-21.5 is your guidance. ❌Is there a German government official taking part in the ceremony who rates honors? If not, you cannot carry the a foreign national color. DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4 is your guidance.

Iron Mike guards the entrance to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum and yet again I am so very impressed with my brothers and sisters in my sister service.

I know of Iron Mike, what is the statue that has the Soldier waving on the troops behind him with the motto "Follow me"?

I have no ties to the Army except going through Basic Camp (initial officer training) at Fort Knox in 1983 and then two years at New Mexico Military Institute. I only know of certain Army ways, I never lived them but this seemed to bring me closer - I definitely have a high level of appreciation for Soldiers and it grows seeing this.

One thing is for sure, we have a different world today with different and better technology but the values and standards highlighted in the museums are absolutely necessary every single day. Weve let them slip.

🧐Color was furled by the leadership literally rolling up the color by twisting the staff instead of the color bearer doing it and leadership ensuring the color is not wrinkled during the process.

⭐Color cased. It was awkwardly brought back to Carry but the bearer did OK.

❌Uh, where are you going? Why are you leaving the formation? That's not correct. Stay there, you don't leave on your own. The formation has to be dismissed or given Fall Out and that's for the whole formation.

🔔TC 3-21.5, paragraph 10-42, bullet three states "The CSM hands the cased organizational Color to a designated Soldier who marches from the
field and the CSM returns to their post. The Color bearer of the deactivated unit marches with the
Color guard for the remainder of the ceremony with an empty sling. Procedures from this point
forward are the same as for change-of-command ceremonies."

👉The color bearer doesn't leave the formation another Soldier carries it off.

I was recently told that the #exhibitiondrill move

I was recently told that the #exhibitiondrill movements I teach are "old". I know! They were "old" when I learned them in 1979 as freshman in high school.

I don't mind that feedback at all and I understand it well. Why do I tech "old" drill moves?

1️⃣Because they are the fundamental moves from which the first routines were developed in the 1950s. It's amazing that military exhibition drill is only a little older than me.

2️⃣Because every year thousands of cadets are introduced to exhibition drill for the first time and it's easiest to help them understand fundamentals and move forward from there.

3️⃣Because writing exhibition drill can be difficult at first and starting with fundamental movement is the most effective teacher.

4️⃣Because these moves are the basics of "military flavor" in exhibition drill and using these moves helps develop that undefinable quality. These are the basis of "I know what 'military flavor' looks like but it's difficult to describe."

I was recently told that I should take a team and

I was recently told that I should take a team and work with them and go all the way to win a national competition. It wasn't a coercive demand but a suggestion. I appreciate it but I have way too much to do right now.

Everyone needs training in the basics. Newbies obviously need it and so does everyone else whether they received proper initial training or not. A refresher is always good and a course correction (learning to do things the correct way) is also good.

I've had several teams go to and win at the national level. What's more rewarding is to receive messages from cadets who have never placed at local competitions write and tell me that they just placed higher or even won for the first time.

Soloists, tandems, teams - whatever you are doing, you can always improve in regulation or exhibition drill and I'm here for that. I have more books to write, videos to record, and online training to produce (wait until you see what's coming!).

If you never compete, I'll be happy with knowing that you learned.

This colors team had a TOUGH presentation! I was tagged in a video on ticktock that shows them marching and struggling against some pretty decent wind. They did a great job!

Two things for them to remember: 1️⃣march and stand at Close Interval only. 2️⃣The only authorized wind bracing technique is to have the left hand on the staff under and touching the right. Placing the left hand on the staff at the socket isn't part of the technique for everyone except the Army and teams authorized to follow ceremonial standards.

We need to have the complete wind bracing technique list authorized for all color guards. It makes sense!

Out of tradition, USAF Honor Guard colors troops wrap the right-hand fingers at Present. For other elements, the fingers are flared.

The gloves, guard left hand, and color bearer left hand all need improvement that can be found in the BHG manual and AFI 34-515.

👉For your team, don't follow what the SDP does unless you are in this exact situation. Team members need to recover their own equipment as quickly as possible to cause as little disruption to the routine as possible.

🤦And please NEVER salute your dropped rifle. Dont cause even more distraction and look ridiculous. For crying out loud that was meant to embarrass you so that you wouldn't drop again but some of you never learned that and took to saluting an inanimate object as a form of respect.

ℹ️Remember, the Long Line in a high school #exhibitiondrill #drillteam performance is not always the most effective use of time. The SDP has perfected it and it's the staple that America loves to see. For your JROTC team, not so much unless you can also perfect it.

Team, let's get some information out about your equipment and performance. First, ⭐you made an attempt at the colors harness socket level. Nice job. That's it for the stars, however.

1️⃣ℹ️You have two colors and four flags. You and your instructors probably don't know there's a difference. The national and MCJROTC colors are for mounting on a flagstaff because they have a staff sleeve, a hemmed loop in the material designed for insertion of the staff.

2️⃣ℹ️The others are flag which have a strip of material at the header end called the header band in which are two brass grommets for attaching to clasps on a flagpole or mast halyard.

3️⃣ℹ️While there are flags that have a staff sleeve that are meant to be flown from a short pole on a ship that can double as a color (historically the USN infantry battalion flag), that type of flag us made of heavy, sturdy materials. Colors are made of rayon, silk, and nylon. All three being quite light in comparison.

❌Guards, you both are at the opposite shoulder that you should be. Lead guard is the right rifle and is always at Right Shoulder. Same goes for trail guard for the opposite shoulder.

ℹ️I'm thinking you are lined up to execute a right face so that the guards are at the outboard shoulder but you would be turning to inverted line formation when you probably thought you were going to turn to line formation.

ℹ️While the MCO states right hand at chin level, it's a good idea to put your pinky at the chin, that way you cover your mouth with your hand and can talk to each other if necessary.

👉Colors are to be 4'4"x5'6" and staffs are 9'6".

"Color guard" you blew it. Three colors, ❌no guards and ❌colors out of order - the US is ALWAYS on the marching right, NEVER in center. Just because it's in the center of the display (proper) doesn't mean it's reflected in the position on the team. ❌No colors harnesses. ❌Improper technique. I know the TC doesn't explain every situation and that's the Army's fault, but you can go to MCO 5060.20 and see Trail Arms which would suffice for this ceremony, if you had a low ceiling. If the ceiling was high enough for Carry Colors, you have no excuse.

Is there a reason to hold the rifle so low at Port? Yes! Of course there's a reason. It's called "Bad Training" and now you can carry on with the rest of your day. You're welcome.

👉Upper sling swivel at chin level. Upper hand guard covering your left eye. Buttstock centered on your body - it's not "left eye, right thigh" because your right thigh is still going to hit the buttstock in that position.
