Using Army techniques for Carry, but guards are flaring the right hand. Pick a standard and maintain it.

Please don't ripple to Present with the colors. Departmental colors do not dip just because Present Arms is called. They dip on the first note of the anthem and are brought back on the last note.

Staffs should have a slight angle when at Carry. That angle and the angle at Present MUST match to the right.

Guards must wear ribbons, badges, and name tags. Bearers should also, but it's reasonable not to even though there isn't guidance for removal except USAF Honor Guard.

The team did a fine job. Practice, practice, practice!

Chaffey NJROTC (Ontario, CA area) colors presentation. The team is sharp, but there are many issues here.

❓Where are the covers for the lead guard and both bearers? This is an indoor presentation, did something happen? ⭐Free arms at sides. ⭐Colors harness sockets at the same level.

ℹ️Regarding the staffs. They *should* be topped with the battle-ax and all the hardware gold-colored and not silver. However, that kind of staff is very difficult to find now, very difficult. The default is what you see here with the silver hardware and the spade.

❌The national's staff sleeve is prolapsing (the inside coming out) and sliding down the staff. It needs to be reinforced and Colonial Flag could do that for you or a local seamstress as long as you can provide the cloth for inside the sleeve. ❌The CA is an ensign. It doesn't have a staff sleeve, it has a header band with grommets and that type of flag is only attached to a halyard for flying outside. This type of flag is not authorized to be carried in a color guard. ❌The state flag is not authorized to be carried. You should have the NJROTC organizational. ❌Bearers, relax your right elbows all the time. ⭐At Order you have the colors gathered under your right arms, but ❌you are using the 'V" Grip, it should be the Strong Grip unless you are in the midst of the transition to Carry, but it doesn't look like it. ⚠️Fringe is authorized on the national for all sea services except the Marine Corps. More on that is coming soon.

❌Guards, fingers are to be extended and joined at the *side*of the rifle and not wrapped around the front, not even a little. ❌Your outboard hands when at Carry should have all fingers joined and wrapped around the buttstock with a split at the index finger for the heel. Tuck the thumb into the curl of the index finger.

👉Notice proper salute technique. Unarmed guards a perfectly acceptable for any team outside of the military. Many times it's a deliberate decision to not use rifles, shotguns, or sidearms and other times the organization forbids it (scouting, SDA Church, etc.).

Highlights of a funeral for a former Commandant of the Marine Corps. Did you know that MCO 5060.20 states the flag is folded and does not have the requirement for the end to be tucked?

The "Button Salute" as I call it by the female Marine towards the end of the video is due to her previous Marine Barracks Washington assignment a few years ago where she was an assistant drum major for the band. The bear skin hat makes the salute a bit different.

Wait, three colors? Is that authorized? Yes! For Navy commands that have a battalion color, yes, it's authorized. You carry the national (with fringe, yes, you read that right, Navy and Coast Guard can have fringe on the Nats!), the USN departmental (must have fringe), and the command organizational. The battalion color does not have fringe because historically, it was used as an ensign as well, - doing double duty being carried in a color guard and displayed from a halyard on a mast, so fringe could not be attached.

I finished my latest research project for sea service flag protocol and man, is it big. That was about 10 days of reading and writing. The above is part of what I discovered. It's good to know stuff and even better when you can reference written standards. The article will publish in the next couple of months.

I do have some guidance for you. "Hey" isn't a usual greeting for a cadet to a adult (regardless of position or rank), by the way.

After an open ranks inspection, it is quite proper to have everyone report to their element leader or flight Sgt to show that the discrepancies were corrected. Frankly, if that's not happening after every inspection, flight staff are not doing their jobs to completion and the cycle of improper uniform wear and not meeting standards will continue.

Informally following up on inspection discrepancies is perfectly acceptable unless there are discipline problems. Then, after the flight is initially dismissed, give a time to fall back in and go through the formal process of opening ranks again. This only works if leadership is strong, knowledgeable, and disciplined.

If someone is not in uniform without good reason (just entered the squadron), then that cadet has failed inspection. If leadership is not in uniform, the example that is being set is in the wrong direction.

CAP constantly celebrates being part of the "total force". Part of being a member of my service is enforcing and maintaining USAF standards for all CAP members and any senior member who dresses down a cadet for attempting to maintain good order and discipline is part of the problem making CAP look like a "total farce". Stop being a bad leader.

This staff should only be used on a permanent indo

This staff should only be used on a permanent indoor static display. It's the least expensive wood staff and the middle screw joint has very fine threads that are easily crossthreaded. That means this staff was meant to be set up once and left.

The header/topper/ornament for this staff is a "Perfect Fit" that has the finial and upper ferrule in one piece, see next image.

Military teams are not supposed to carry this staff. I suggest that everyone else not carry it either, just use it for the indoor display.

Maximus, one of our dogs, pictured helping me with this project, made dumping sand out of my 30 floor flag stands and then filling them back up with sand and plaster an absolute breeze!

This project took me several days with a big, initial learning curve. I'm glad I had so many stands so that I could improve the process as I learned. Now you don't have to go through too much trial and error to ensure your stands are heavy, solid, and won't spill sand everywhere anymore.

When dressing the ends of the flag on a casket, you must ensure the stripes align. The bottom photo is just an example to prove a point, my trainees in Pittsburgh didn't screw it up.

Both ends are brought up and folded back so that the fold is approximately at the end of the lid. As you simultaneously reach down, bring your hands out along the edge of the flag about even with the corner of the casket. If you bring your hand to the corner of the flag, you will have too much material to work with.

Once you flip the material back, keep your hands at that end to straighten the stripes. Move out to the sides to flatten end end, and then bring your hands together at the fold and work your way out to the ends there. Going back and forth, here and there, randomly, is not the look you want. Be methodical.

What's interesting about flag protocol is that outside of the military, hardly anyone has a clue as to what to do. Take for instance, this set up for DHS. So many questions that need to be answered. Why is there a battle-ax on the DHS color? Why are there different finials? Why use the gold cord and tassels? Flag spreaders are not authorized in the military, but why have two flags spread and the USCG not? One day I might be able to answer these questions. In the meantime, having variation in the display isn't a good thing.

@ntagsw presented the colors at a @padres game. The team is doing a passable job. Definitely not meeting all standards, but the national is not being placed in a poor light, that's arguable.

ℹ️The bearers are using the two-hand grip. ❌Unnecessary since there's isn't any significant wind. ❌Right hands need to be at mouth level. 👉Fringe on the national. I'm studying this in-depth right now and will have significant news soon. ❌No finials on the staffs. ❌National should have the red, white, and blue cord and tassels attached.

ℹ️Guards, not exactly the manual of arms. ❌Outboard elbows must be at a right angle with the forearm horizontal. ❌You are executing Mirror Present, that's not authorized.

ℹ️The whole team should be wearing belts, but the leggings, harnesses, and gloves are great.

Decent job, I appreciate the effort. Please read the colors section of MCO 5060.20 and get battle-ax finials for the staffs for your next event.

Do you practice how to handle problems in your routine? If not, you need to start today.

Two ways to handle this particular situation.

1) the Marine steps out of formation and retrieves the rifle himself.
Benefits - he recovers quickly. The routine can get back in motion without the crowd waiting.
Cons - he steps out of formation and does not look like the rest of the Marching 24.

2) the inspector stops, retrieves the weapon, and gives it to the Marine.
Benefits - the team maintains uniformity and cohesion.
Cons - the sequence is halted and momentum takes a big hit.

Looks are everything here. Members of the @silentdrillplatoon know exactly what to do when problems arise: maintain the team's strong look and let the commander or inspector handle the rest. You have to weigh the benefits against cons. If you are in a timed competition, choose option 1 every single time. Get the routine back in motion ASAP!

Last year's training for CAP. Flag Detail worked really well, the cadets were awesome. As long as know-it-alls step out of the way, proper training happens because cadets who attend training like this are very eager to learn. They soak up training like this like a dry sponge soaks up water. They can then pass along that proper training.
