Flagstaffs should not be carried like a rifle at Port across the body, that's a guidon position used when marching at Double Time. Use #PortForColors and for very low clearance areas like a doorway, use #AnglePort.

👉It's the Naval Academy, why doesn't the color guard use the battle-ax finial? Because they carry the Marine Corps departmental and that flag, the senior of the two services, is never topped with anything other than the flat, silver Army spearhead/spade. That means all other staffs must be topped with the same finial.

As long as the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and/or Space Force flag is present, all finials must be the spade. When only the Navy and Coast Guard flags are present, the battle-ax is required.

@ohionationalguard, is this the best you can do? In training for colors we teach that #PortForColors is used for a low clearance area, a low ceiling. That ceiling doesn't mean clouds (that's for flying, not colors). You are outside, you go to Right Shoulder. Didn't have time to train for that? Call in a JROTC or first responder colors team and bow out.

👉The OH flag here is is brought to #AnglePort because that's the dip required from Port. This is proper but the team never should have presented at Port. 👉The team should only depart at Port after presenting.

Unacceptable.

❌At Port outside. ❌US is #FishPoling. ❌Sling threaded through #StackingSwivel.

Seven years ago today I finished the certification

Seven years ago today I finished the certification of Turlock Fire, Modesto Fire, Modesto PD, and a couple other agencies. These LEOs and firefighters became Certified US Ceremonial Guardsmen and came away from the week of training equipped to handle any colors presentation requirement, casket transfer techniques, casket watch, firing party, flag fold and presentation techniques, protocols, and much more.

Nobody teaches what I do, trainees do not learn the necessities of the ceremonial elements elsewhere, and I find that unfortunate. I've retrained many who have been through every other "clinic" and they know little to nothing about the requirements for each position.

I so wanted to work together with others when I began teaching (first responders and cadet programs) and quickly found that wasn't possible for one reason or another.

I've talked about #ColorBearerBracingTechniques that we use in the ceremonial drill world. It's a series of techniques that increase. All commands are subdued and only for the team to hear.

1. Bearers Ready, Two. Left hand on staff at the socket.
2. Bearers Ready, Slide. Left hand slides up staff to under and touching right.
3. Bearers Ready, Step. Left foot moves 6" to 8" to the left.
4. Bearers Order, Colors (pictured). Staff brought to Order and both hands maintain a grip. If the silk can be gathered, do it.

These are stages/steps. You start with 1 and progress or you go directly to 4. It all depends on your situation. At whatever stage, you still go to Present, even with feet separated, except for 4, remain at Order and bracing position . The guards do not follow the commands.

❌8' staffs with 4'4"x5'6" flags mounted on them. ❌Different sizes flags in the same formation.

👉The Army can mount the larger flag only on a 9'6" staff. They can also mount the smaller flag on either length of staff. See AR 840-10.

❌Marching shoulder-to-shoulder. ❌Grips on rifles need work. ❌Left hands on staff must rest at the socket. ❌US flag socket lower than Army.

This is bad training. I don't know the team or even what the setting is for them. It seems odd to carry cased colors and have the guards execute Sling Arms outside of a competition unless it's for a demonstration. Photo sent in.

Anyway, ❌bearer left hands are wrong. The technique of a flared left hand pressed against the harness socket isn't a technique that exists except in someone's mind. It looks ridiculous butt what is worse is that the hand placement doesn't do anything. The reasoning the Army decided to place the left hand on the staff at the socket in the 1970s doesn't make sense but was probably to just be different (the services have "fought" like this for over 100 years). However, the left hand's grip is actually supposed accomplish something by the fingers curving around the socket and the thumb curling BEHIND the staff.

Recently, AFJROTC decided AFJROTC colors guards need to follow all of the Army standards without taking into account any AF techniques or the history of the service. It's easier to ignore, apparently. ❌This means the guard's cradle technique is wrong. They are using the technique from the MCO, which is usually required because AF/SF guards are supposed to be at the outside shoulder and perform the processes outlined for the guards in the MCO because of rifle placement.

❌Metal staffs aren't authorized for any color guard at all. Ever. .

❌John Wayne ceremonial belts for the bearers. ❌Chinstraps are worn down in this uniform on colors. ❌The silver chinstrap is to be grounded to the bill. ❌Belt keepers are worn one inch from the buckle.

When I went to work with the team at the beginning of the year I got to meet the leadership of the Guard and was informed of the increase in touring for the team - what a great opportunity for the team AND the public!

Vendors are out of silver fringe and there's none in the supply chain. If you order a US Space Force flag, it will come with white fringe for the time being. It's authorized, just not preferable.

👉Edit- Glendale Parade Store has many SF flags with silver fringe.

❌Carrying the USAF flag is mandatory. Even if the SF squadron is joint, this is a purely AF team and you are required to carry the AF flag. You can ADD the HI flag. ❌ #tuckyourgloves ❌Team members are required to wear chinstraps down on colors. ❌NCT left-hand knockles not squared. ❌Guard left hands too high. ❌Harness sockets could have been adjusted much better to have them at the same level. ⭐Good spacing.
