From the 1st Armored Division. Tradition continues…

On November 30th, the 2d Engineer Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, held its 73rd Annual Burning of the Colors Ceremony commemorating the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Battle of Kunu-ri in the Korean War.

In the fall of 1950, U.N. forces pushed North Koreans to the Yalu River, but China's entry surprised U.S. and U.N. forces, leading to a withdrawal. The Sapper Steel Battalion was part of the 2nd Infantry Division, fighting and defending a U.N. position at Kunu-ri, which allowed the 8th Army to withdraw south.

The 2nd Engineer Battalion faced overwhelming odds against the Chinese, leading to Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Alarich Zacherle’s decision to set fire to his battalion’s colors rather than have it taken as a trophy by overrunning Chinese troops.

These flags on the stage at the @usnavalacademy need adjustment to meet standards.

The USMC color is *NEVER* topped with any other finial than the flat, silver Army spearhead (spade). See MCO 5060.20. It never changes.

The USN is topped with the battle-ax. See NTP 13B. Why this finial must change when displayed or carried with other service colors (except USCG), I'm not sure.

I don't see the problem of having different finials in a display or being carried and can find nothing that mandates a finial change except for the national and organizational for certain circumstances outlined in the NTP that are based on VIP rank in only the Navy and Coast Guard. That's it. You don't change other service finials. That's inappropriate.

By the way, the battle-ax finial has the blade point forward, not to either side.

Since the team is in the baee chapel, why is the team wearing covers and the guards armed with rifles? Why is the LT covered and saluting? Why is an iron sticking up from the pews?

❌Chin straps, not #ThroatStraps. ❌Rifles need to be vertical and 4" away from the chest. ❌Colors at Order? Then rifles at Order, not shoulder.

❌Wrong staffs. ❌Wrong finials. The eagle is not authorized. The gold spade is also not authorized. ❌Wrong color colors harnesses for this uniform. ❌Slings are required on rifles. ❌Org bearer, it probably slipped your mind as everyone smooshed in for the photo, but your grip on the staff.

Young Marines units MUST follow MCO 5060.20. The guide put out by the organization does not come close to meeting standards.

Usable feedback means you are to take the information and learn from it. Or, you could just make excuses and whine. Your choice.

The rebuttal to this does not begin with "Yes, but," if you are mature and serious about improvement. You use that statement to make excuses. A future military officer should not be comfortable with doing that.

This is my mother-in-law, Jean Gross, when she enlisted in the WAVES as a dental hygienist during the Korean War. She lived with Mrs. DrillMaster and me for the last 10 years. This morning between midnight and 0200 she passed away. She was saved a few years ago and we will all see each other again.

I was able to talk with her for about a week when I arrived home from my previous training tour around the country. The last three weeks have been mentally and physically a huge challenge and a blur. We've cared for her every need every few hours in her last three weeks and all of the 10 years have been a privilege.

Love you, Mom.

Never, ever, ever, ever point a rifle just for fun. Even if it's a 2x4 cut to look like a rifle.

I know it's fske, you know it's fake. We know that it's impossible to "shoot" the Daisy Drill Rifle or any of the DrillAmerica or Denix Replica Rifles.

But someone else, who isn't familiar with JROTC is, doesn't know.

ALWAYS make sure that, if you are going to take aim, then you are going to pull the trigger, send a round down range, and hit whatever target. That means you won't be shouldering the butt of a drill-purpose rifle. Ever.

The University of TN at Knoxville @utkarmyrotc put together what they call a "joint force" color guard recently. A Joint Armed Forces color guard is made up of members of two or more services.

Active Duty, ROTC, and JROTC. Interesting.

When Army is present, TC 3-21.5 applies to everyone.

❌You HAVE TO ensure the harness sockets are as close as possible to the same level without ❌the US socket being lower than any other.

❌Wrong staffs. ❌Wrong finials. ❌Mixed staffs. ❌Mixed finials. ❌The Space Force flag CANNOT have gold fringe. Silver is mandatory. If silver isn't currently available, white fringe. ❌MC departmental is "Cutting the Cake", which does not happen on joint teams. ❌The team should be at Close Interval. ❌Right rifle guard, right hand flare is not authorized.

⭐Left hand on staff at socket.

Critique of a @smhs.njrotc (GA) colors presentation.

I know there is an NJROTC cadet manual. Following it for D&C is not going to steer you right. It doesn't follow MCO 5060.20. Use it for other things, but not D&C.

❌You're in a church and the MCO states no rifles, no covers. ❌Do NOT dip the Navy departmental, nor any other military flag, for the Pledge of Allegiance. Military flags have strict specifications on when they can be dipped. ❌Right rifle guard, your left elbow is supposed to be at your side as you wait for the Cut command. What you are doing there is an armed individual salute when you should just be flaring your left hand. ❌The timing for the guards going to Present should be that you both end at the same time. ❌Right hands must be on the staffs at mouth level. ❌Org bearer, since your hand is a bit low, your dip is super deep. ❌As you dip, since you are are using staffs with spades, you "Cut the Cake", but the rotation of the staff should be gradual and clockwise.

👉As you brought the staffs to Order both bearers moved slowly and therefore the movement was awkward with the staffs breaking vertical. Thrust the staff downward in a single count. I show how in a video here: #MakeFlagstaffManualGreatAgain. Scroll to the beginning of the tag. 👉Ensure you regrasp the staff with the left holding the left forearm horizontal, let the staff slide through both hands, hold with the left and gather the silk with the right. The gather is an individual move that was never intended to be synchronized. It takes as long as it takes because silks do their own thing.

⭐Good precision on the Cut. ⭐Team presents well. ⭐Correct equipment. ⭐Good spacing. ⭐The team is decently aligned on the center aisle. ⭐Guards executed Order fairly well.

All Marine Corps and Coast Guard organizational flags must have fringe. Same for the Navy except for the Infantry battalion flag. These three services are strictly forbidden from displaying or carrying the national with fringe.

👉Probably the second worst type of colors harness you can buy, which is why the bearers' left thumbs are in front of the staff, but shouldn't be. ❌Wrong staffs, team. No one is authorized to use metal staffs. ❌Harness sockets could have been better adjusted to as close as possible to the same level. 👉AFROTC cadets, you should have had chin straps down. ❌Ceremonial belts should be MUCH tighter and the ❌keepers must be one inch from the buckle. ⭐Good technique overall. ⭐Guards at Right Shoulder.

The Colors Diamond Formation! I used to do this in the early 1990s and have randomly taught it since then. It's great for presenting the colors since the guards remain in place for the #ColorsTurnOn and Off and the color bearers execute a Wheel with the rotation in the center (color bearer or space). I'll have to record it one day and show you all.

That's not good. This is from @usarmyoldguard but the colors team here is not TOG, it's @1stsfcommand. I never expect a high level of achievement from operators in D&C, but this isn't good at all. An hour's worth of just-in-time training doesn't work.
