"Don't lock yer knees!" Are you that unaware? Do you really think a Marine Corps Drill Instructor is going to hyper extend his knee joints (what is commonly called "locking")?"

Of course not!

So, what happened? Let's take a look at the possibilities.

1. Dehydrated. It takes three days to properly hydrate and you must stay hydrated, especially when active.
2. Didn't eat well or changed his diet. Even switching protein powder that morning can have a very serious effect on blood sugar content. Your body needs a consistent supply of food and, more importantly, relies on the regular intake of food.
3. Start of an illness. Zinc and D3 are your best friends.
4. Start of pregnancy. I once had a female friend in formation who was gaining weight and didn't know why so she began an altered diet to lose weight. She passed out at guard mount and she and her husband found out they were going to have a baby.
5. "Locking" your knees. That engages your thigh muscles which restricts blood flow upstream to your brain. That's bad news many times.

You must condition yourself for long stands, especially in direct sunlight with heat and humidity. This is San Diego, it's hot and humid in the summer.

I posted this three years ago with a description of my trainees performing their mock funeral that day and the crying and ridicule were off the charts.

One of the best responses was from a cadet to those who just hated this photo because I'm smiling and should have been "more respectful". The response was "Do you even know what he does for a living?"

We don't want to know context, we already know enough, right? Wrong. I was driving the hearse that day for the mock graduation funeral. It's my casket, nothing in it except I store my flags inside. I drove the hearse around to the caisson so the pallbearer team could perform the transfer sequence. The caisson would then go to the mock grave site and the funeral continue.

Just because it's unusual, doesn't mean it's wrong.

@norwichuniversity color guard marching the joint service colors, but including two that are not authorized: state and school. DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4 and AR 840-10 along with MCO 10520.3 and AFI 34-1201 are very clear as to what colors are carried in a joint color guard.

No other flag is added and the service colors are never carried without the US. That creates a bit of a dilemma for the school, but there are three options. 1) march the correct joint colors with the US only, 2) march the US, state, and school only, or 3) march two teams, both with the US and guards.

Peterson SFBHG. This happens with incomplete training. The BHG program is woefully understaffed at just about every base. Still, standards are on place and must be met.

What's happening here?

❌Presenting from Port in a hangar. Port is only for a low clearance area. ❌Guard left hands are high because they are used to firing party technique that requires the left hand to grasp the hand guard above the magazine that is in the mag well. ❌Left guard is holding the rifle much too high. Probably doesn't have enough training time under her belt. Bearers remove ribbons and badges. ❓Left guard looks like her cover is resting on her hair bun on the top of her head. ❌Left guard's shoulder cord shaker knot is not secured properly.

Canyon Lake (TX) AJROTC colors presentation at the school for a pep rally. I'm a stickler for standards, as anyone reading even one of my posts will find out. However, I'll give some leeway here for the missing blouses and and here's why: the team probably had a double-tap, two colors presentations, that afternoon and it's hot and a bit humid. I'm not necessarily condoning being out of uniform, but understand that might be a possibility. That, or the t-shirts are of the unit and showing school spirit. Understandable. A bit.

⭐Really nice to see the state and AJROTC institutional color in the lineup. ℹ️Some might wonder about color size here. Since the AJROTC only comes in 3'x4', the US and TX should also be the same dimensions. That size is a a special order, but not unheard of, you have to call the flag maker for it.

❌Bearers, your left thumbs are in front of the staff, you need to wrap the thumb around the staff. Here's why: the thumb in front position doesn't make any bit of sense whatsoever. I know that the cartoon drawings in the current TC show thumbs behind and in front depending on if you are at Carry or Present, that's ridiculous and the artist's fault for not drawing clearly. Paragraph 15-34. states, "Grasp the staff with the right hand (even with the mouth) and incline it slightly forward with the left hand SECURING the ferrule in the socket." Emphasis mine. You can't secure what you're not holding on to.

⭐Good spacing. ℹ️You need spade markers to ensure all spades are flat all the time. ℹ️Make sure you wrap the right hand around the small of the stock at Present. ❌At Parade Rest, the right hand remains in place on the rifle as when at Attention. Just push the rifle forward and wrap your fingers around the hand guard without sliding the hand up the hand guard. ⭐Good belt and harness wear. ℹ️Ten inches between heels at Parade Rest - Army only. ⭐⭐⭐Sharp team!

This morning's work! Great progress with colors. Old habits and muscle memory die hard. That's why we train and train. After practice, a bit of maintenance. It's frustrating to have a color that has a hoist that is taller than the upper part of the staff. The bottom cannot be anchored properly. Spade markers reworked, screws tightened, colors anchored, and cords and tassels adjusted. See the next post for more on that.

Oh good, Velcro. There was nothing wrong with the clasp that the Velcro replaced. All this does is make it a bit less complicated, but the challenge was overcome by thousands of cadets over the years. Here's to a kinder, gentler, touchy-feely Sling Arms.

It's a privately owned flagpole so the owner can display as many flags as he chooses. No gaps are necessary for civilian display. Only the Air Force requires a gap and only two flags are flown from one halyard.

It's *best* when the other flags are about half the size of the US. The fewer flags, the better. Why? The flagpole is only made for so much tension caused by one flag in do much wind. Any more tension created by more flags or a bigger flag degrades the lifespan of the pole.

Colors display that most of us are not used to. The order of colors is wrong and missing a necessary flag.

The order should be: US, Department of Homeland Security (missing and required), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), USCG (currently last), and CBP Air/Marine Division (with the giant yellow chicken). The CBP AMD is a component of CBP, does not outrank the USCG, and therefore should be displayed last.

Think of this display in military terms: the US and two Air Force Wing colors are being displayed along with a Group flag. All this without the AF departmental flag. That's not following flag protocol.

DHS flag protocol is a subject I'm currently tackling with @professorflagg so that we can iron out some of the issues. Publishing that article is weeks away.

First photo. The corps of cadets color guard of @tamu that follows corps staff carries the national, state, and corps colors. ⭐I very much appreciate the adjustment of the harness sockets to get them to a similar level. Excellent attention to detail.

Second photo. Each major unit staff has its color follow them carrying the ROTC and unit colors. This is 1st Wing color guard, so it has some form of AFROTC and 1st Wing colors. The problem here is that military organizational colors, of which these are a type, are carried alone - no guards.

Military parade organizers have two options, 1) create a massed color guard with all the subordinate color bearers in subsequent ranks, this can cause problems with color guard movement, or 2) post unit color bearers with unit parade staff (like the recent photo I posted from the Air Force Academy). Either choice is fine, the rules must be followed however, and one is no guards for unit colors in either formation.

❌Guards at... No, this is unacceptable. That rifle position is not used for colors, ever. It doesn't matter if you never used it for your performance, you created the position, took a photo, and posted it on social media.
❌That formation is also never used for colors.

What was your thought process, @civilairpatrolmariposa ❓Colors is not about anyone on or associated with the team. Colors is purely about rendering honors to our flag. That's not happening here because someone made something up and decided #ExhibitionColorGuard would be cool.

Remembering the 592 Special Operations Maintenance Squadron. Because of their limited training, the Hurlburt Field (FL) BHG apparently ❌only knows how to present the colors at Port, even in an aircraft hangar. ❌Tuck your gloves. ❌Your chin is just below your lo lips. That's where the *chin* straps go, not at your throat. ❌US bearer, your carrying fairly high and ❌your left forearm should be 4" from your torso with your wrist and hand following that same straight line, not curved back to the staff. Still, ⭐⭐⭐ for the team.

@rtcgreatlakes - that's not how the M1 Garand is charged. Right hand grasps the small of the stock and the heel of the left thumb is placed on the charging handle with fingers and thumb cupped.

What you see here is only for the M1903, where the handle pulls the bolt out of the chamber.

When we are overseas and marching I'm a parade to represent not only our specific service but the USA, it would be really nice to ❌get the flags in the correct order, ❌have a full color guard with two rifle guards, ❌at least pay some attention to harness socket height, and not have ❌a guidon bearer who isn't goin' fishin' at the end of the street.
