Sergeant First Class Ahmed Shafy, widely known by his nickname “Killer”, is one of the most distinguished drill instructors and ceremonial specialists in the history of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF). Born and residing at G. Reyva Villa, he joined the National Security Service (NSS), now the MNDF, on 23 December 1993, beginning a remarkable military career that has spanned more than three decades.
Throughout his service, Ahmed Shafy has earned a reputation for discipline, professionalism, courage, and unwavering dedication to duty. His strict yet inspiring leadership style has gained the respect of countless officers, cadets, and personnel across the Maldives.
His military career has been marked by active participation in several major national events and emergencies. During the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, while stationed in S. Gan, he served as an operational leader, coordinating relief efforts and ensuring the safety and welfare of the people of S. Hulhudhoo-Meedhoo and S. Meedhoo. His commitment to serving the nation was further demonstrated during the 2014 Maldives Water Crisis, where he assisted in unloading and distributing emergency water supplies to the public. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked tirelessly on the front lines, risking his own health to serve the nation and was later awarded the COVID-19 Medal and Ribbon in recognition of his service.
Ahmed Shafy is best known for his expertise in military drill and ceremonial duties. He has served as a Drill Master, Drill Wing Enlisted Leader, Commander of the MNDF Drill Squad, Official MNDF Internal Drill Judge, and Commonwealth Drill Judge. His contributions have helped shape military drill standards in the Maldives, earning him recognition as one of the country’s pioneering drill instructors. Throughout his career, he has conducted more than 60 major drill sequences and has trained numerous MNDF personnel, police officers, and cadets.
In addition to his military achievements, Shafy has excelled in sports and physical training. He is an accomplished footballer, handball player, handball referee and coach, bodybuilder, weapon instructor, fire performer, martial arts practitioner, and elite trainer. His dedication to sports has earned numerous championships and awards, while his coaching and instructional work have positively influenced many young athletes and service members.
His professional development includes the completion of numerous prestigious courses, including the Weapon Instructor Course (1999), Drill Instructor Course (2004), NCO Leadership Course (2006), MP Basic Course (2011), IHF Course (2014), Olympic Basic Handball Coaching Course (2014), and Police Drill Instructor Course (2016). In 2006, he received the prestigious GUNGHO Award during a United States bilateral training program, which led to the nickname “Killer” becoming widely associated with him.
Among his many achievements are being crowned Mr. MNDF 2010, serving as the first Head of the MNDF Drill Wing Department in 2019, contributing to the historic 50th Independence Day Drill Display, and representing the Maldives at the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023. For his participation in this historic event, he was awarded the King’s Coronation Medal and received international recognition. In the same year, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class.
His long and distinguished service has been recognized through numerous military decorations, including the Ribbon for Skill, Marksmanship Ribbon, Ribbon for Bravery, Dedicated Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Long Service Medal, SAARC Medal, COVID-19 Medal and Ribbon, and the King’s Coronation Medal, among many others.

His contributions to military drill, national service, sports, and youth development have left a lasting impact on the nation.
