I get sent photos almost daily, some days it's multiple times. When I first looked at this one I saw the usual flag protocol issues with the general officer flag: the flag is upside-down and the gold cord and tassels is not authorized. I was just going to post this with the #MakeFlagProtocolGreatAgain
#MakeFlagDisplayGreatAgain tags and leave it at that but I read the caption.

This is the photo of of a newly-promoted Airman to the rank of Colonel. That's great to pin on the bird, awesome! But wait, that's Kellie Courtland who was just promoted! I know her! What a surprise. She was one of my Airmen (a SrA) on the joint service honor guard at AFCENT in Brunssum, Netherlands in the mid 1990s.

Congratulations Kellie, uh Ma'am! I'm thrilled for you. Now, about the GO flag...

Utah Military Academy’s north campus color guard

Utah Military Academy’s north campus color guard. There's a mix of standards here, ❌using #PortForColors without tucked silks and ❌bearer left hand positions, ❌staffs are too low to the marching surface, ❌the lead guard is at Trail Arms instead of Port, ❌trail guard's rifle seems to have disappeared (if also at Trail, the rifle is never carried in the left hand). All that can be fixed with proper training and eliminating the pseudo-standards currently taught (many programs have this issue).

⚠️However, the POW flag is NEVER carried in a military color guard. How do we know this? Two reasons:

1. All D&C manuals state that members of the military are forbidden from carrying any non-governmental flag. That means only military, state, territory, and national flags are carried, never any flag outside of that guidance. The POW flag is a private organization's flag and is not authorized to be carried at any time other than the funeral for a former POW. That's it.

2. The AF went so far as to spell it out for Airmen and Guardians. AFI 34-1201 specifically states that the POW/MIA flag is not carried in paragraph 2.33.6.7.

👉Stop carrying the POW flag just because "Vietnam" is in the title of the ceremony. It does not represent all vets from that era, only the POWs and those MIA.

I was sent this seeking my thoughts what the cadets are doing. The @pr.nationalguard sponsors the Puerto Rico Youth ChalleNGe Academy just like Army National Guard units across the country (that's why there's the capital "NG" in challenge). I think the program is in each state and possibly other territories.

It's a bit strange to have the dignitaries for the graduation ceremony escorted by armed cadets (the rifles are DrillAmerica M1s, not real). Unarmed escorts are usual.

The color guard looks great! I'm not thrilled with the stylised Mark Time since the National Guard Soldiers should be working from TC 3-21.5 but Puerto Rico has been influenced by Central American drill and ceremonies to some extent for centuries and I understand the possible cultural influence here.

#BugleStandingManual does not include creating an embouchure ("ahmbusher"). In the first slide you see three brass playing musicians, my friend Jari Villanueva, @tapsbugler at top. In order to make the instrument produce sound the lips must vibrate as air is forced through them. The arrangement of the lips over the teeth and the use of the tongue create the musician's embouchure. "Playing" an electronic bugle does not require embouchure all. If the mouthpiece is clean (and you must keep it clean), place it on your lips, keep them together, and breath normally through your nose.

⚠️Please don't swallow the mouthpiece. It goes ON your lips, not IN them.

I'm trying to find a letter in my files and I came across some of my original drill design writings and the SOP for the 1983 SCIDM. I even saved the original drill design from my JROTC SASI (79-83). I've marched, taught and judged for a LONG time and enjoyed the journey. I've learned so much, so much so that I've probably forgotten more than I've taught and that's why review is necessary.

Before I teach exhibition drill, I review my records and books. Before I teach first responders how to properly execute ceremonial duties, I review. Army standards for color guard? There's my TC. AF standards? Well, they almost don't matter anymore. Right? Anyway...

Moving to playing position from Attention. Do not move the horn with your left hand, leave the left arm in place at Attention. Reach across with the right hand and keep the horn level while raising it to playing position. Play (sound) with the horn level. Never point it up or down.

👉Electronic bugle inserts have a tendency to slide out after continuous use (pulling it out of the bell to change batteries and reinserting it). Make sure the insert is seated properly.

⚠️I'm aware that live buglers have heartache over the electronic bugle. This is not the place to gripe about it. Argue all you want but it's a necessary item for many teams around the world.

This is Ceremonial at Ease. It's a two-count move. So is going back to Attention.

For my trainees and those I've certified, the command Stand at Ease covers all ceremonial elements and we perform it in one count. The reasoning behind this that learning two different commands and styles of movement are not conducive to first responder honor guards because ceremonial duties aren't their main job. It's easier to learn one technique and apply it to everything. However, the two commands are required for the military.

Everyone who might perform duties as a bugler, electronic or live, needs to know the positions for Attention, the hand salute, and Stand (Ceremonial) at Ease. This is #BugleStandingManual -

👉Ceremonial at Ease is two separate counts but many find that concept to be foreign since Parade Rest is one count. To execute Parade Rest, place the right hand behind the back in the appropriate position and leave the horn in the Attention position.

👉To come to playing position, the left hand is supposed to guide the mouthpiece to the lips but that looks ridiculous. Once you practice the technique a few times, singlehanded movement from Attention to Playing is easy.

👉If you are a brass player, then your playing position includes both hands as normal to have the fingers rest on the keys. All other positions are the same.

⚠️Don't play to the sky, keep the horn horizontal. Don't hide, you are a ceremonial element and need to be seen by the NOK. And PLEASE don't do any kind of personalization of the positions or movement or add to the manual. This is not about you at all and no one is supposed to remember you as an individual. If they do, that's nice but is never the goal unless it's your ego that needs to be uplifted.

I'd really like to know how this happens. The @u.s._army_caisson_platoon of the @usarmyoldguard has their flags backwards. Now, the unit flag is probably to the (viewer's) right of the American flag but that doesn't make this display any better. It's wrong. Fix it. Educate your Soldiers, TOG.

All flagstaffs in a display must be equal length. All flags must be as close as possible to equal dimensions. Both of those requirements are met here. The next requirement is that the American flag is ALWAYS to the right (viewer's left) of the line of flags. ALWAYS. The American flag is never placed in the middle in a military flag display because of the first requirement mentioned.

With one guard for #CasketWatch and nothing (flowers, etc) in the way at the head, there is NO reason to stand in front of the casket, especially at the (almost) center. The look here can be seen one of two ways:

1. A (sloppily) centered guard who is ceremonially guarding.

2. A guard who is blocking the view.

I see number 2 and I don't appreciate it, especially with someone at the podium.

The minimum for Casket Watch is one guard. The mx is two. The FIRST position for the guards is at the head and foot next to the casket. If items are there, then the guards post in front of those items. If there is too much at each end, then the guards post in front of the ends of the casket.

This should be known standard protocol.

Sent in with a question. Is that sword salute technique correct? No, it's not! However, this could be an #exhibitiondrill phase and this type of technique is just fine then.

When I judged the @pershingrifles competition for their national convention I saw many procedural and technique errors that awareness and education will fix.
