It's quite annoying that TC 3-21.5 has the image o

It's quite annoying that TC 3-21.5 has the image on one page and the explanation on another. That doesn't makes sense and it leads to some not completely reading/seeing the standard.

For instance, Parade Rest for the color guard. On page 15-15, we have the text that says staffs are kept vertical at Parade Rest. However, the image, the unbelievably bad drawing of a color guard at Parade Rest, is on the next page. This image seems to show staffs angled forward with right forearms horizontal pushing the staffs out. The drawing is bad, let's get that out of the way. But most people go right to the image and don't read the description. That's where you run into trouble.

The flagstaff manual comes from the guidon manual, but the flagstaff does not use every position of the guidon because flag protocol is a bit different. That means on the command "Parade" of Parade Rest, the right hand slides up the staff so that the forearm is vertical for both staffs, but on "Rest", only the guidon is pushed forward.

Honestly, I prefer keeping the right hand at the position of Order, arm extended straight down, for the flagstaff Parade Rest. It makes more sense.

This is what happens when you don't do your own reading, which is required of the NCO carrying the American flag, and rely on word-of-mouth training.

❌The whole team is in reverse order.

❌❌Flagstaffs are NEVER pushed forward at Parade Rest. Never. Especially the American flag. This position is only a guidon position for parade rest and a Salute position at the position of Order. Yes, a Salute position.

👉This is Present Arms AT Order, not FROM Order. That is perfectly acceptable when needed. This is not that time.

Very low ceilings require a somewhat odd technique, but the team is able to get the job done.

#AnglePort has the staff pointing straight forward (over the right shoulder of whoever is in front of you) at approximately 45 degrees from vertical. That position is used for getting through a low clearance area like a doorway and then you go to #PortForColors or Right Shoulder. Using Angle Port over the left shoulder, an approximate 45-degree angle to the left from center, is for a continuously low clearance area where you cannot raise the staff any higher.

LCDR in the middle of PresentDraw - double the technique in a single move. That's not Draw and not Present either. I get that sword use is not all that common for anyone in the Fleet, I don't expect the highest level of excellence that comes out of the @usnceremonialguard or @marinebarrackswashington, but I do expect training, practice, and at least one rehearsal using proper technique. Honestly, she should have gone to a CPO and asked for guidance and a knowledgeable PO should have been assigned to her and stuck to her like glue ensuring she knew the ropes.

It's not like there aren't any Sailors in the Fleet that did two years on the Guard in DC. Whats interesting is that those highly-trained me and women move out to the Fleet, volunteer at their new command for colors or other ceremonial duty, start to perform the requirements properly, and are immediately shot down with "That's not the way we do it here." Don't believe me? I have the private messages that bear that out from at least a dozen Sailors. Some were so frustrated, they got out.

I was supposed to get to this critique of the @ltmurph_seacadets a few days ago. So, I have a couple of minutes before I get ready to teach.

⭐The team looks very sharp! ❌Flagstaffs must be the same length. The MCO requires 9'6" staffs with 4'4"x5'6" flags. Honestly, I think cadets should be authorized the 8' staffs and 3'x4' flags as an option. ❌US bearer's socket is lower. ⭐No fringe on national and fringe on org. ❌Guards slid their hands up the rifles for Parade Rest. Leave them in place as when at Attention. ❌US bearer not using Strong Grip. ❌Left rifle guard not fully extending right arm downward at Attention. ❌Feet should be 12" apart at Parade Rest. ❌Right rifle guard's belt needs to be tighter. ❌Org bearer's heels not together.

Great shot here of the mourning knot on the bottom of the knuckle bow of the officer sword. The knot is tied on the bow for funerals. Why it's only for the Sea Services, I don't know. The same goes for the mourning band. Both are symbols of mourning (hence the name) and communicates to others that the individual is in a period of sorrow I their life. Many people used to wear the band, but now you will probably only see them at military funerals.

The Ceremonial Guardsmen are the #casketbearers and the Officer-in-Charge. They are standing at the ceremonial position of Ceremonial At Ease. Feet parallel, 4"-6" apart, with hands together, left-over-right, at the front. A much easier position to maintain for an extended period.

The Admiral, closest to the camera, is the commander for the #PlanesideHonors as the #pallbearers move the casket from the civilian aircraft to a awaiting coach (hearse). He is not Ceremonially trained and does his part to fit in with his team from the @usnceremonialguard. With a Admiral present, the deceased was probably the same rank or slightly lower.

SSgt. Esteller, 423rd ABG BHG NCOIC, is dressing the US flag during a change of command ceremony at RAF Croughton, UK.

The USAF has pushed responsibility down since its beginning. What eventually happens is that it goes too far. BHGs used to be run by seasoned NCOs at the MSgt and TSgt level. That's starting to fade as I meet different program leaders at the SSgt level.

They rotate through the position in a couple of years, which is not enough time to fully learn and implement all the requirements of the job, but can be a start. However, the replacement usually doesn't heed all the knowledge passed on and nothing improves. There's also the stupidity of the military's "Do more with less!" that began in 1990 and has been regurgitated since. Barely enough personnel to do a congressionally mandated job.

❌You CANNOT carry the British, or any other foreign national flag, per DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4, unless a British government official takes an active role in the ceremony.

That means you must now have a full set of colors displayed on stage with the British flag and the color guard perform a show-n-go.

❌Your shoulder cord shaker knot is not secured. ❌Your silver chin strap is not grounded. ❌Your black chin strap is facing the wrong way. ❌The gloves with the silly velcro strap are not authorized. Honor Guard gloves with the long wrist are what you wear. ⭐The flag is draped correctly to the right.

The American flag held here is a commemorative flag that made it's way around the Department of Homeland Security. So why turn this into a pseudo color guard when the requirements aren't met in the first place?

The flag is on a short staff that is made for display from the side of a building in one of those mounts that has one or two positions for the staff. That tells us that guards with rifles are not necessary. ❌The slings are mounted through the #StackingSwivel. ❌Left "guard", your right hand is too high with your elbow bent.

Why hold a Department of the Interior flag in the same line to the right of the American flag? Why the placement of a bugler in the center of the formation?

Everyone could have lined up for a nice photo with the commemorative flag and left every other piece of equipment out and avoided some very strange issues. This just doesn't make sense.

The @uscgacademy color guard. Why you carry all the service departmental colors is confusing, but it's authorized. OK.

❌What isn't authorized is putting the battle-ax finial on the staffs of any other service other than the Navy and Coast Guard. These are the wrong staffs anyway, so the guidon flagstaff that the national is on us the only authorized staff for the rest of the colors. The staffs must be 9'6" long with 4'4"x5'6" colors.

❌Your service does not carry a national with fringe. #DrillMasterSeamRipper time.

⭐Good hand placement. ❌Guards need to lower the rifles and flare that right hand.

This is what every color guard should strive for every time you are in formation. Bearer height and waist levels (see next paragraph) are almost immaterial - sockets are worn at the same level just like the bearers here from @usnceremonialguard are doing. This is your goal.

Color bearers who Aw very different in height and/or waist level must adjust the socket levels so that the US bearer's is MINIMALLY higher and never ever lower.

👉If you are wondering snout the bearers' left hands on the staffs at the sockets: 1) It looks windy enough for Bearers Ready Two, or 2) When going to Present from the deck, the music (anthem or honors) might start immediately and not give the commander enough time to give (Bearers) Ready Cut. If that's the case, never talk or move after the music begins and handle it afterwards.
