Bearer height, waistline level, and colors harness level. The first two are different, the last one is the same. Note, first responders have some leeway in wearing the harness (not under the duty belt) whereas military teams do not.

When I post this type of video (my second in several years) its to help others understand. Not everyone marches well. When I worked with a local AJROTC we had one cadet who forced himself to march on the drill team because he didn't march well and he was going to college to be an Army officer one day. He worked hard to learn how to march fairly well. He was an asset to the team. He would march minimally in his coming college years and then very rarely, if at all, while Active Duty.

For the enlisted, marching is a bit more of a requirement. You SHOULD be able to perform the very basic tasks such as marching front and center for a promotion/award. You need to able to do this and this Marine should have practiced. He should have sought help from his squad leader at a minimum.

I worked with Belgian and Dutch WWII reenactment g

I worked with Belgian and Dutch WWII reenactment groups at several monuments throughout the area while I was on the Spangdahlem Air Base Honor Guard. This is a French group in the town of Carentan (if it doesn't sound familiar, look it up, it's fascinating). The groups spare no expense to ensure every detail is as close to the original look as possible for their vehicles, equipment, and uniformsa.

The photos were sent in for critique. ❌The colors harness sockets need to be at the same level. ❌The sockets are worn below the waist with the web belt over the harness. ❌Left hands on the staff at the socket, no higher unless there is strong wind. Then, slide the left up the staff to Under and touching the right. ❌Heels must be together and toes pointing out 22.5 degrees in each direction. ❌When flagstaffs are at Carry, the guards are at Right Shoulder (what you see here is a French version of D&C if I'm not mistaken). ❌Both flags should be 3'x4' (here, the US is 3x5). ❌Right rifle guard is too close. ❌When at Order, fingers are extended and joined at the SIDE of the rifle.

Marine Barracks Washington storage method at the top and Continental Color Guard method below. Which method of flag storage is better? That all depends. It depends on how long the flags will be stored, their weight (embroidered or not), and the material they're made from (nylon, polyester - the most common materials, or rayon - a more expensive, silk-like polyester).

Storing the staff horizontal is perfect. Allowing the silk (the name for the flag material) to hang for extended periods of time, the material will stretch. Draping the material once or twice over the staff is going to allow the material to rest and not stretch.

Which is better in the long run? Both organizations have flags going in and out just about hourly each day. The Continental Color Guard's @usarmy_ccg method is better. The @marinebarrackswashington method works well for daily storage but the flags still can stretch a bit.

I do appreciate the team wanting to be uniform. Having an all-female team you would think skirts are OK as long as everyone is wearing them like this fine looking team, right? Wrong.

Skirts are an optional part of the uniform for females, they aren't issued. Plus, the ceremonial cap is not authorized with this uniform combination.

Black slings, belts, and gloves are not authorized for this uniform or for a performing color guard. AFI 34-1201 states blue web items are for practice and that the black, shiny clarino (a type of patent leather) is for performances.

On a personal level I think they look great. I would be a proud parent seeing my daughter in this lineup, honestly. However, from a professional perspective, I find this unfortunate. Thus team was put in this awkward situation when it could have been avoided.

Why? Why use entirely different facing movements for ceremonial drill? There's a very good reason, actually two. 1) So as not to rip up grass in a cemetery (especially Arlington where dozens of funerals take place M-F), and 2) to completely eliminate the possibility of getting your feet caught on any kind of surface.

This is a lack of education and training. It's apparent there's been no formal training and probably the team gets volunteers who just show up to perform certain tasks. Our flag deserves better.

You are staged at the back of the room out of order. Team members do not exhibit an awareness of parade rest or the position of attention. They are unaware of travel techniques for the flagstaff and unsure as to how to present the colors to the audience and the posting process. Flags are mounted correctly on the staffs and the staffs are facing properly.

The team should have lined up facing the camera with the US leading. They should have staged behind the chairs and not centered on the aisle. The announcer should have said "Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the presentation and posting of the colors" or something to that effect. The US bearer then should have called the team to attention, and Bearers Ready Two for them to go to #AnglePort from order since the ceiling is so low, and Forward March. Skipping presenting the colors to the audience is an option for them. Instead of marching directly to the stands and then awkwardly sidestepping, they should have rounded their corners and marched past the stands while staying close to the audience and then marched in to the stands at an angle so that they could see each other to post.

No matter what you do, swim team, bowling, archery, track, ballet, baseball, dance drill team, military drill team, etc. it's very beneficial to your whole body, not just physically but mentally as well. ⚠️Practice does NOT make perfect. There is no such thing as "perfect practice". Practice makes PERMANENT. You must educate, train, and then EFFECTIVELY practice (not "perfectly" practice) and do it consistently over time.

The great thing about a #firefighter #ColorGuard is that they get to pick from different kinds of tools to use for the guards. My preference is two fire axes since they are easily recognizable and to not use either size of pike poles, let alone mix equipment. We don't mix equipment for military color guards, not even rifle types.

❌The flagstaffs for this team are much, much too short. ❌All staffs must be the same length and all flags must be as close to the same dimensions as possible. Military staffs come in 8' and 9'6" and flags come in 3'x4' and 4'4"x5'6". These are guidelines to follow. ❌Staffs are not the same type. ❌Finials are not the same.

Did you know that people get paid for a funeral? T

Did you know that people get paid for a funeral? The #pallbearers the #firingparty the #colorguard the troop escort, the bugler, the mucical ensemble (band, drum corps), the piper, the chaplain, the funeral director, the embalmer, the coroner, and the list goes on for any other things that happen (flying in the remains, casket maker, etc). Everyone is paid.

The family usually pays the bugler and chaplain through the funeral director. It's a way of saying thank you for the services you provide. What about military? They get paid. Their job as an honor guard member, for however long, means they are paid for that job. What about first responders? Same thing. What about civilian buglers and pipers? They get paid by the family for their service.

Is any of this a surprise? Why? A bugler or piper has every right to earn a living, no? Of course they do. If not paid by the military service or department, the family takes care of them. Some buglers do not take money and that's their choice. It doesn't make them better than others or make a bugler who does take money worse than others. It's a choice and should be kept quiet.

#MakeFoldedFlagCarryGreatAgain - This is the Left-over-Right hold/Carry technique. Point-out or facing you does not matter except here, these Ceremonial Guardsmen are going to Present these two extra flags to next of kin along with the flag that drapes the casket when it's folded. The presentation of the flag to the next of kin should always be long edge toward the recipient.

These "extra flags" are relatively common. The government pays for one (presented to the primary NOK) and the family then purchases how many ever they want presented to other family members.

There are a couple of different flag hold/carry te

There are a couple of different flag hold/carry techniques that are good, solid, and protect the flag from being dropped inadvertently or coming to some other kind of harm used by the military services. They are used specifically because they are tried and true.

Some outside the military might use the crossed-arm "Death Grip" (cadets mostly) that distorts the flag to a severe degree.

In at least one case, a firefighter carried the flag point-forward with both hands behind the flag at the long edge as if it were a tray. Not the best carry technique at all. The only one worse than that would be to carry it with a "U" grip palm-down. The last time I posted that photo, I received threats. Yes, really.

The Flag is meant to be cradled and held securely.

#ColorsTurnOff and #ColorsTurnOn

The Turn On is for facing your audience. You can march in place at a predetermined spot or the commander can call Mark Time (March). It can also be used by substituting Forward, HARCH for the Halt command. I've actually used that twice.

The Turn Off is for facing away from the audience and departing. You can also use this in different situations too.

These are good tools to have to help you navigate different colors presentation situations.
