❌Females MUST tuck in their blouse on colors. That came out in a MARADMIN several years ago and then it was put in the uniform reg. ❌The green web belt is mandatory in this uniform for colors.

ℹ️Feet are inconsistent in second photo. ℹ️Right hand is too high on the staff at Carry. ℹ️Rifles butt toe must be in line with your toes. ℹ️Lower staff ferrule must be against the shoe at the little toe.

This is how first responders and military work together. Color guards don't integrate, that sends a bad message. This is perfect. The team on the right can be the one in charge of the ceremony. When both teams are invited the precedence for what team is on the right goes in order: federal, state, county, city.

From what I understand, @downey_vikings_jrotc is a new unit in CA! Cadets, please read TC 3-21.5 for rifle manual (Appendix D for the 1903) and colors requirements (Chapter 15) and AR 840-10 (Chapter 4 for flag and Chapter 8 for the staff) for flagstaff and color (flag) size requirements.

ℹ️You have some mismatched color sizes when all must be the same.

ℹ️I notice two colors being carried in a possible second rank with the SGM in between (that's odd). In AR 840-10 it tells us in paragraph 1-8. Restrictions, f. that you cannot carry nonmilitary organizational flags. Having said that, a school flag could be seen as an appropriate flag for the cadets to carry along with the AJROTC flag.

ℹ️FYI, you must carry the AJROTC flag and can add the CA, but not replace the AJROTC flag with the CA.

👉New unit equals uniform challenges. Doing the best with what you have. The lack of covers (hats) may be due to not having them or a school restriction on them. I would hope schools with a hat restriction could exempt the color guard.

I've been asked for my thoughts on the USAFA Retreat photos posted by the school. Here we go!

I have to say that the photographer did a very good job catching certain moments and angles.

1️⃣❌There's no need to look up at all, especially when the flag is barely half way down. Flag Detail members have no need to look up except for the halyard bearer who ensures the lines are separated when starting hoisting and lowering. The Catcher who is shown here saluting and looking up, must look straight ahead and salute until the flag comes into view. At that time, he drops his salute and moves to the flag to collect it in his arms.

2️⃣⭐Catcher is collecting the flag fairly well. What would be better would be to have the bottom fly end corner in the left hand and the top corner in the right hand as the your use your arms to gather the flag.

ℹ️This flag is at the size limit to have the Catcher gather it without risk of dropping part of it. Any larger and I would suggest handing off to the flag handlers for folding.

3️⃣❌The top of the flag when after the first and second folds should be as level as possible. The bottom red stripe should be about 3 or 4 inches below the top edge of the flag after the first fold. The bottom folded edge can be brought up to the same level.

4️⃣❌The two supporters and cadet at the header end have no need to look down. The one at the header end will look down when tucking the excess. ❌You can see how the bottom red stripe is showing just before the tuck. While the end result may be good, it's best not to have red right at the edge. ❌Why is a member of the team at Parade Rest and facing away? Have three support and two fold.

5️⃣Top. ❌Way too many hands. Two can take care of the end tucking. It's not necessary to engage everyone - and you're not but you are in a way. ⭐Bottom. Good job ensuring the flag looks its best. The Wonder Woman crossed fists are OK, the USAF uses flared hands.

6️⃣You're not a color guard, you're a flag detail. Shoulder-to-shoulder is not a USAF formation except for colors.

ℹ️A color guard is defined in AFPAM 34-1203. Even the badly written CAP D&C manual has that info. The formation must have two guards armed with rifles. There can be one color bearer carrying the US at a minimum. The team can also have more color bearers with the mandatory color being the USAF departmental. In your case it would be the CAP/unit organizational.

ℹ️If you are going to carry all service colors, that is authorized under DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4 and only the departmental colors are carried with the US.

ℹ️Departmental and some organizational colors are NEVER carried without the US in the same formation. Exceptions are org colors in a Wing or multi Wing formations where group colors are stationed with Group commanders instead of in a massed color guard.

FYI. ℹ️Departmental colors must have the US present in the same rank. That means these colors are NEVER carried in a massed color guard rank other than the first. Also, a massed color guard is not authorized when more than one departmental color is present.

❌Everyone should have worn the same headgear. The billed cap with two chin straps would be best. That way flight caps would not be knocked off. ❌Left hands belong at the left side, you do not follow TC 3-21.5. If there is strong wind, the left is on the staff under and touching the right. ❌Right hands on the staff at shoulder height. Forearm horizontal. ❌Metal staffs are not authorized. ❌The Marine Corps color must have the yellow and scarlet cord and tassels mounted.

However.

❌The US is being carried lower than the USMC color.

❌Joint service color guards must conform to DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4 and AFI 34-1201 which both state that no other color is authorized to be carried. State colors cannot be carried because the DoD represents the USA, not a specific state.

❌IAW TC 3-21.5, MCO 5060.20, and AFI 34-1201, the US and all departmental colors must have fringe. These colors are not authorized. You can send them to a flag company to have fringe attached.

❌That is not the USAF flag, that is the USAF emblem and is actually not a flag. The USAF departmental color has the coat of arms and an arc of stars.

❌There is a "common knowledge" that the harness sockets *must* have the same drop (measured distance) below the belt. That's not a thing at all, it's a myth. It doesn't matter where you learned it or that the guy who taught you had a bunch of stripes. It's a myth!

❌Next, it's also "common knowledge" that the national color must *always* be higher than other colors. That's a myth. It doesn't matter who told you it's a law and the penalty for breaking that law is death. It's a myth!

ℹ️Colors are carried at the same level unless bearer height or waistline level is so different that the organizational must be carried *slightly* lower. That's it.

❌Guards, you might as well rest the rifles on the deck since they're almost there.

The expectations of the adults produces utter garbage like we see here. Everything is wrong and the cadets haven't a clue as to what a standard is. I don't know what school this is that is failing at leading and training the cadets.

When you give a, pass to not meeting a standard, you are part of the problem. I'm not talking about doing the best with what you have at the moment and trying to improve as you move forward, that's different. But to say "oh well, they didn't meet the standard(s)" makes you the problem.

Stop arguing with me about this (you tiny handful of people) because you are dead wrong. We are raising a generation that can pick and choose the standards which they maintain and/or get "close enough" to whatever standards.

Again, for you who seem to think all I'm saying is that I'm correct and you're wrong, you're missing the point entirely. It's about the standards, not me.

I have followed behind other "trainers" and corrected so many bad and wrong positions and techniques over the years. Just because you call yourself something doesn't make it true. It's the FRUIT of what you do that gives credence to your words. There's rotten fruit out there from bad training.
