❌No flag can be larger than the US in a color guard or display. You have a 3x4 US and a 3x5 CA. Not good. The CA can be altered or you can order a 3x4 version, but you must specifically ask for a 3x4 since only the military uses that size. ❌The CA does not have fringe. All USAF flags must have fringe. ❌Brlts on the males are too low and the female's belt is just a bit low. The crummy McPeak three-button blouse requires the belt to rest between the bottom two buttons. ❌Left rifle guard, fingers extended and joined at the SIDE of the rifle and ❌don't tuck your left thumb into your fingers. ❌The harness sockets do not have to be that low. #HarnessSocketCrotchSyndrome ❓I don't keep up with uniform info, but I think the Wing and Star Device is not authorized on this cover. It's only for the ceremonial cap. Please double check that. ❌The AF departmental or AFJROTC flag is required. However, some teams cannot field more than four cadets for the team and school principals like state flags. ⭐Spacing. ⭐Correct staffs.

Gen. Milley retired and Gen. Brown stepped in as Chair JCS. This is a photo of the reviewing stand.

Seating: for this ceremony, the pecking order went from the middle (President), to his left (VP), to his right (SECDEF), and on from there. Milley and Brown changed places after the formalities.

Flags: The DOD is rather muddled on this one. They put the guest of honor first and then the personal colors in order. This isn't a huge issue, it does make sense with posted or even carried PCs.

❌The VP's colors should NOT have been there as she did not participate in the ceremony. It looks like it may have been thrown in on the end as an after thought. Not good.

❌VP returned Milley's hand salute. Just stop it. You have no affiliation to the military. See #PresidentialReturnSalute

I don't know what school this is. AJROTC color guard. If some of the extremely few people who scream the loudest had their way, I would be telling these cadets what a wonderful job they are doing here and give each one a trophy.

Is that positive to just gush over cadets shoeing up but doing something wrong? Does it help in any way? No, and no. Anything other than constructive criticism would be a lie, unhelpful, and possibly detrimental in the future. Detrimental? Let's say one cadet goes ROTC or even enlists. Now, he/she has poor training that could lead to an extremely embarrassing situation for a ceremony (for instance).

What affect does a photo like this have when published without an appropriate critique? Others see it and some may assume the techniques and positions are authorized and can be copied. Hardly anyone reads anymore, many rely on photos.

What might be worse is bad training from some who have no military experience or who have military experience with very a limited D&C background and yet gladly say "I consider myself a drill guy".

All of these instances combined or taken on their own are a recipe for disaster.

The color guards of the @usnceremonialguard practice with a green silk on the flagstaff for the national bearers, but why? The same reason the Commandant's Four at @marinebarrackswashington practice with cased colors. So that the American flag is treated with the honor and respect when it is in view. However, I prefer the green silk or using another flag in place of the national so that the bearers can train and practice as realistically as possible. That's why I use state flags for all positions. The flags I use are cut down to the correct size and therefore have incomplete emblems or wording. They are my practice flags.

Speaking of realism, you can see the silks are rolled here as the bearers move into line at #AnglePort.

Here, colors and the platoon are practicing for a funeral. The @usnavyband would be to the color guard's right or another platoon and then the band to the far right. The number of platoons depends on the rank of the deceased.

Notice the angles, finials, toe height, rifle positions, etc. ⭐⭐⭐

@usnavy and Spanish Sailors celebrate the 70th anniversary of Naval Station Rota in Spain.

The best you can do for joint international color guard formations is to be as prepared as you possibly can. Next is to practice with your host nation team members. US military color guards can be very different from our colleagues in other countries, so adaptation without breaking flag protocols is going to be beneficial. However, some situations you just can't help.

Here you can see the flag of Spain being carried lower than the US. That's not a good thing, but each country represented here has its own carry methods and this cannot be helped unless one or the other was willing to switch to the other's colors harness. Again, do the best you can.

The US bearers could have been better prepared by reading about hand positions on the staff.

⭐⭐Still, nice job.

My team 14 years ago. I had just joined the Spangdahlem Air Base Honor Guard as a retiree becoming the trainer. Wearing a uniform was last on my list. I wanted to ensure these Airmen and others were fully trained for any eventuality. A few months later I would put on the ceremonial uniform of the USAF and start performing as the only Authorized Provider Partnership Program member at Spang and probably Europe, if not overseas - and not just for the USAF.

@af_osi colors display. 👉US, AF, OSI, SES. ❌Since the OSI org flag is 3x4, the others should be or, if the OSI org is available in 4'4"x5'6", that size should have been displayed. ❌The SES is draped the wrong way. ❌Wrong stands, but I see why they are used, because of the ❌wrong staffs.

SES is Senior Executive Service. This is the USAF version. Certain civilians serve in positions that are recognized as military General rank equivalent and the SES flag serves as the PC (positional color) for that position.

This is the Madison Scouts @madisonscouts from 1975. After WWII, men came back and started forming and teaching community and school marching bands and drum and bugle corps. They taught brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, marching, and added a strict military styled color guard one American flag color bearers and two rifle guards. These color guards began to expand immediately adding generic flags and rifles. The spinning of these two weapons (the flagstaff was a spear, but no longer counted as a weapon) was very strict and the color guard members marched everywhere. Sabers (spelled sabre due to the affiliation of dance) were added in the 1980s. Dance was slow but sure with less marching and more movement that continued to increase until the early 2000s and beyond where you cannot recognize the the foundation of the musical color guard, which was the military.

When we don't know our history, we don't know what direction to take for our future.

Whoever is draping the casket shipping container with thr flag, stop it. 👉The flag drapes nothing but the casket itself and a transfer case. I know, #emotionaler and #ceremonialer, but stop. Also, 👉the flag is not put any place where it might be easily soiled like, say, a cardboard box in the luggage compartment of an aircraft.

❌The POW/MIA flag is not carried at all any other time than when it is carried as a PC for the funeral of a former POW/MIA. That's it NEVER in a color guard formation. 👉See MCO 5060.20 where it talks about not carrying non-government flags in the colors section. ❌The Coast Guard does not carry the national ensign with fringe. Take a seam ripper to that immediately. #DrillMasterSeamRipper ❌The battle-ax finial is only for the Navy and Coasties and NEVER tops the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Space Force flags. Never. 👉See TC 3-21.5, MCO 5060.20, and AFI 34-1201. You need the staffs with the silver-colored Army spearhead finial and silver-colored ferrules and middle screw joint. ❌If these finials are silver, that's also wrong. Navy and Coasties use gold-colored finials only except for the spade. ❌Please cut the little white tags off the USAF and USSF flags. ⭐Flags in correct order. ⭐Flags carried at the same level.

Full joint service requires certain placement and so does partial. Partial should never be looked as "Hey it would look really nice if we did 1-2-1-2, or even 1-2-3-1-2-3" meaning the difference in two or three services together, respectively. It doesn't work that way. One service present is senior, the next junior and this is how that is set up.

I dislike runs with flags, guidons, sure, but flags aren't my cup of tea (Earl Grey, please). However, that's just my preference. However again, that preference is based on flagstaffs only being authorized in a color guard and, by extension, battalion and PC bearers. So, there's reason to not carry flags on runs. And then we get to the POW here. It's not carried in any formation because it's not an official government flag. It's a private organization's flag and therefore I'm the class of a novelty flag. I don't write this to be indulging, I wrote it to educate.

The POW/MIA flag is only, ONLY, *ONLY* carried as the personal color at the funeral of a former POW/MIA. That's it. Never any other time. Ever. AFI 34-1201 states it "is not paraded". That has nothing to do with what you may think: a street parade or military parade, "paraded" means you pick it up and move a step with it for any reason other than as a PC.

As much as you might not like it, there is no argument for carrying it at any other time. "But, POW/MIA Day" is not a reason or excuse.
