Unlearning some AWFUL habits. "Do it this way, it LOOKS good." The arm was used to help create visual memory and it worked! The team is doing SO WELL and fully understanding the training that comes DIRECTLY from the manual. Column of Files/Threes is very different between each service - you must know exactly what you are doing.❓What does the Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard do now that these moves are no longer in the MCO?

First image: Spats are low-cut and fit over top of the shoe: canvas leggings (or gaiters) are higher cut up to mid-calf. This is what Navy Sailors traditionally wore when going ashore. It's what you wear now for colors, firing party, and escort, but not pallbearer. Third: what you will see if you search for "Navy leggings" 😅

This is a GREAT example of needing to understand the context of the photo. How on earth could the Marine Corps departmental flag be dipped with the guards at shoulder and not Present? Because this is the portion of the program at #marinebarrackswashington that talks about the Marine Corps Battle Flag. As the announcer speaks, the flag dips forward and is then brought to vertical. 👉Don't jump to conclusions. Ask questions.

The only reason I say that is because of the swords, swords are not authorized for any other team in the Fleet. To me, the team should be in period costumes to use the swords, and any other time use rifles. ❌Fringe on the national.

I love hummus. You can buy some that has chopped olives, peppers, etc, in a mound in the middle. Some people like to mix this all up and eat it with crackers or flatbread. I don't like mixing. I prefer to have a little of the olives in some bites but not all. I also like to eat hummus with stalks of celery. My method of enjoying hummus is probably very different from someone else and I don't critique anyone on their hummus consumption (see my new account, HummusMaster 🙂). I'm not going to write a manual about it, that would be useless. However, when we come to drill and ceremonies, we have manuals, we have published standards. I've written volumes about this and will continue to critique. Some don't understand why I critique even to the point of quoting, "punish in private." That's sad. Education is not punishment. Critiques may be painful, but are not punishment. Life is full of standards.

The guidon bearer positions two LEFT steps and two steps to the rear of and to the LEFT of the formation commander. ❌Colors, we have the usual wrong staffs and wrong finials (flying eagles this time), but ⭐the finials are at the same level. ❌Flags should be the same dimensions. ❌Right rifle guard, your web belt is not worn over your uniform belt when wearing a blouse, it's worn above. ❌Left hands are NOT grasping the staff at the harness socket.

Holding the saber/sword scabbard is only accomplished at three occasions: 1️⃣ when drawing the sword 2️⃣ when returning the sword, and 3️⃣ when you are the commander of troops for a pass-in-review and are escorting the VIP to review the formation and out of courtesy you hold the scabbard so it does not hit him. 👉That's it. Stop holding onto your scabbard any other time. Yes, I'm aware it hits your leg as you march, it's just something you must deal with at the time-you don't wear it all day every day.

Judging competitions has always led me to teaching

Judging competitions has always led me to teaching something. Here, I flew from Germany to FL to judge a firefighter honor guard comp in 2009/10 and ended up teaching the two-man flag fold. This was when I was a member of the Spangdahlem Air Base HG as a retiree. Everyone THINKS they know how to fold the national (all you have to do is look at the gold illustrations), but there are several techniques that are not common knowledge that need to be understood. 75th Ranger Regiment change command. The unit colors are taken from the color bearer in the color guard formation and used in the exchange of the flag from the previous commander to the new one. Most often in the USAF, it's the guidon that is exchanged. Either one is fine. The exchange dates back (centuries probably) to when unit personnel gathered to see the new commander. Now, it's more formalized and still retains a rich tradition.

Sent in by a follower! The RAF Mildenhall BHG color team. Photographers can get performances at really awkward times and this is one. However, we can learn from a moment in time. The team has good spacing. The spacing facilitates equipment movement. The team was probably at Present and is in the process of going to Port for their exit. With that in mind, we can see that timing is off. Coming from Present, the rifle guards have a two-count move. The color bearers also have the same counts. On the command "Port", when at Present, any dipped colors are brought to vertical in three counts. At the command "Arms!", everyone executes their movements. The team is doing well and just needs more practice.

Time to break-in a new pair of jump boots! The first pair I had issued to me was for the BHG at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ back around 1990. We ladder laced our boots with white paracord with the core removed and had the same uniform as the Elite Gate Guards. Why? Because the first Air Force ceremonial unit was a bunch of Air Police, cops! 👉Do I spit shine my boots? Does a chicken have lips? No way! It's the Leather Luster kit and direct sunlight for me. It takes way too much time to shine my low quarters (corfam) and boots. Even my Sam Browne is Clarino along with my colors harness. My time is better spent elsewhere. 👉It does you GOOD to spit shine. I did it for years in JROTC, at NMMI, and my first few years in the USAF. You learn great lessons shining your shoes and boots and then you progress on over the years.
