Every time I visit a new JROTC or other cadet unit

Every time I visit a new JROTC or other cadet unit, I break out the screwdriver and ensure the screws on the staffs are secure. Maintenance is not understood and mostly ignored. Please teach your cadets to perform regular maintenance and make available the tools necessary - screwdrivers, powdered graphite, hammer, etc.

Cadets, don't just mindlessly use equipment. Keep your things clean, dry, and serviceable. Taking care of your equipment is part of performing your job to the best of your abilities.

Colors look very good here for the @ussocom ceremony. I bet since the NCOIC is a Marine, he had all the color bearers "cut the cake" and twist all the staffs. That's not authorized for joint service colors. All spades remain flat at all times.

Hahn Air Base closed in 1993 so in 2010 the local

Hahn Air Base closed in 1993 so in 2010 the local village missed the American Airmen so much that they asked the Spangdahlem Air Base Honor Guard to present and post the colors and fold a flag (that's why I and the other bearer have our ribbons and badges on) to present to the burgermeister one last time because the village was celebrating its 900th-plus anniversary.

It was such a great day to spend with the locals. Everyone took photos with us and we all enjoyed a nice evening with a brass band and excellent food.

I was the only retiree servingy on a BHG in Europe (possibly overseas) for the last three years of Mrs. DrillMaster's 20-year career as an F4 avionics technician (4) and then a nurse (16+).

Were you all grabbed 15 minutes before the ceremony, given the equipment, and then pushed into place? That's a serious question because there's no way any of these Sailors know what MCO 5060.20, Drill and Ceremonies, is let alone have read the colors section.

Have a seat, this is going to be long.

❌Navy colors carries the national, USN, and if authorized, the battalion colors. That's it. ❌You are carrying only the tops of the staffs. Low ceiling? Then use Trail Colors. ❌Wrong staffs. ❌Missing finials. ❌All colors should have fringe. ❌All the colors are partially furled because the staffs are too short. ❌The national is ALWAYS carried on the right. NEVER in the middle. ❌The web slings are mounted wrong. Read my article on how to do it. ❌You are dipping the silks into the faces of the audience. ❌Colors harnesses are mandatory to wear. ❌Left hands do not hold the staff, they belong at your sides. ❌No we belts. ❌Right rifle, you cover is crooked, it could have been knocked by a color, but they are partially furled. ❌The POW is NOT authorized in a military colors formation. Ever.

ℹ️Right rifle, your Present technique is OK. Rifle 4" from the breastbone, left hand is good, and right hand needs more of a downward angle. ℹ️Ensure you maintain Close Interval at all times. ⭐Matching angle forward for the staffs at Present. ⭐National staff vertical.

It is your responsibility to know your job. When assigned to the team, that became your job. That job entails honoring and respecting our nation's flag and the other flags you are authorized to carry.

You didn't do that. Leadership and personal failure.

Colors display for the Army Medical Department Regiment. This is not a good look at all.

❌The US, (Hong Kong or Tunisia), and Vietnam flags are to be the same size or as close as possible. It's insulting to the other countries.

❌Actually, all the colors are supposed to be the same size/dimensions and you didn't even try.

The US and Army are 4'4"x5'6"; the two foreign nationals look to be 3'x5', a size not authorized in the US military; and the personal colors are 3'x4'.

The Marine Security Guard account on Instagram blocked my DrillMaster account years ago because they didn't like me sharing their horrible colors performances that never meet standards.

Those managing the account could have taken responsibility for screwing up, learning, and set the bar higher for training. Instead, the choice was to block and avoid.

A few years ago I sent an email to to MCJROTC instructors about the horrendous job their cadets did for a colors presentation. Their response was summed up like this "We were fighting wars and doing Marine stuff!" What that has to do with them now being retired and high school teachers, I have no idea. The last comment I received from the LtCol was "Thank God you don't teach." I burst out laughing when I read that.

Arrogance. That's what blinds many to reality.

There are more important things to do for MSGs! Not when you are assigned to a color guard. That's your job. Before your shift, breaks, after duty, whatever it takes. Colors is part of your job until the finish of the ceremony.

Performances are usually seen by the highest level of officials in the foreign country where you are stationed. You have a responsibility to represent the USA at your best and not like the garbage shown in these two photos from. 2023.

A flag should be attached at two points. That follows the Flag Code requirement for it to be "aloft and free". Whether the two points are the top two corners or at the header band, either is fine.

Now, what we don't want to do is go so far into the wording that we cannot understand why this flag is attached at multiple points along the header band. This is a very large flag and to have it attached at the top and bottom grommets only would create an enormous amount of tension on the material at those two points.

In the case of large flags like this, the more grommets for the clasps the better.

I get it, @mizzounrotc - six guards for your colors team included campus PD and local FD in commemorating our most tragic event. I understand why, I just don't agree with it, especially adding the fire color bearer.

Military does not mix with any other agency for a color guard. We know this because color guard manning is fully described in DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4, TC 3-21.5, MCO 5060.20, and AFPAM 34-1203.

❓Why such a great gap between color bearers? The formation is unbalanced and that's not a logical split.

"Don't lock yer knees!" Are you that unaware? Do you really think a Marine Corps Drill Instructor is going to hyper extend his knee joints (what is commonly called "locking")?"

Of course not!

So, what happened? Let's take a look at the possibilities.

1. Dehydrated. It takes three days to properly hydrate and you must stay hydrated, especially when active.
2. Didn't eat well or changed his diet. Even switching protein powder that morning can have a very serious effect on blood sugar content. Your body needs a consistent supply of food and, more importantly, relies on the regular intake of food.
3. Start of an illness. Zinc and D3 are your best friends.
4. Start of pregnancy. I once had a female friend in formation who was gaining weight and didn't know why so she began an altered diet to lose weight. She passed out at guard mount and she and her husband found out they were going to have a baby.
5. "Locking" your knees. That engages your thigh muscles which restricts blood flow upstream to your brain. That's bad news many times.
6. Anxiety. Maybe you're not prepared as well as you think you should be. Maybe it's being out in the public and performing.
7. A mix of any of the above.

You must condition yourself for long stands, especially in direct sunlight with heat and humidity. This is San Diego, it's hot and humid in the summer.

I posted this three years ago with a description of my trainees performing their mock funeral that day and the crying and ridicule were off the charts.

One of the best responses was from a cadet to those who just hated this photo because I'm smiling and should have been "more respectful". The response was "Do you even know what he does for a living?"

We don't want to know context, we already know enough, right? Wrong. I was driving the hearse that day for the mock graduation funeral. It's my casket, nothing in it except I store my flags inside. I drove the hearse around to the caisson so the pallbearer team could perform the transfer sequence. The caisson would then go to the mock grave site and the funeral continue.

Just because it's unusual, doesn't mean it's wrong.

@norwichuniversity color guard marching the joint service colors, but including two that are not authorized: state and school. DoD Instruction 5410.19 Vol 4 and AR 840-10 along with MCO 10520.3 and AFI 34-1201 are very clear as to what colors are carried in a joint color guard.

No other flag is added and the service colors are never carried without the US. That creates a bit of a dilemma for the school, but there are three options. 1) march the correct joint colors with the US only, 2) march the US, state, and school only, or 3) march two teams, both with the US and guards.

Peterson SFBHG. This happens with incomplete training. The BHG program is woefully understaffed at just about every base. Still, standards are on place and must be met.

What's happening here?

❌Presenting from Port in a hangar. Port is only for a low clearance area. ❌Guard left hands are high because they are used to firing party technique that requires the left hand to grasp the hand guard above the magazine that is in the mag well. ❌Left guard is holding the rifle much too high. Probably doesn't have enough training time under her belt. Bearers remove ribbons and badges. ❓Left guard looks like her cover is resting on her hair bun on the top of her head. ❌Left guard's shoulder cord shaker knot is not secured properly.

Canyon Lake (TX) AJROTC colors presentation at the school for a pep rally. I'm a stickler for standards, as anyone reading even one of my posts will find out. However, I'll give some leeway here for the missing blouses and and here's why: the team probably had a double-tap, two colors presentations, that afternoon and it's hot and a bit humid. I'm not necessarily condoning being out of uniform, but understand that might be a possibility. That, or the t-shirts are of the unit and showing school spirit. Understandable. A bit.

⭐Really nice to see the state and AJROTC institutional color in the lineup. ℹ️Some might wonder about color size here. Since the AJROTC only comes in 3'x4', the US and TX should also be the same dimensions. That size is a a special order, but not unheard of, you have to call the flag maker for it.

❌Bearers, your left thumbs are in front of the staff, you need to wrap the thumb around the staff. Here's why: the thumb in front position doesn't make any bit of sense whatsoever. I know that the cartoon drawings in the current TC show thumbs behind and in front depending on if you are at Carry or Present, that's ridiculous and the artist's fault for not drawing clearly. Paragraph 15-34. states, "Grasp the staff with the right hand (even with the mouth) and incline it slightly forward with the left hand SECURING the ferrule in the socket." Emphasis mine. You can't secure what you're not holding on to.

⭐Good spacing. ℹ️You need spade markers to ensure all spades are flat all the time. ℹ️Make sure you wrap the right hand around the small of the stock at Present. ❌At Parade Rest, the right hand remains in place on the rifle as when at Attention. Just push the rifle forward and wrap your fingers around the hand guard without sliding the hand up the hand guard. ⭐Good belt and harness wear. ℹ️Ten inches between heels at Parade Rest - Army only. ⭐⭐⭐Sharp team!

This morning's work! Great progress with colors. Old habits and muscle memory die hard. That's why we train and train. After practice, a bit of maintenance. It's frustrating to have a color that has a hoist that is taller than the upper part of the staff. The bottom cannot be anchored properly. Spade markers reworked, screws tightened, colors anchored, and cords and tassels adjusted. See the next post for more on that.
